As many of you know, I am on the board of directors for a wonderful organization called Musical Ambassadors of Peace. One of our brilliant Musical Ambassadors, Ari Honarvar, created a beautiful project called #droppoemsnotbombs promoting peaceful relations with Iran. I was honored to be asked to participate.

“In Iran, we have a centuries’ old tradition of the poetry game, ‘moshaereh,’ during which we use the last letter of a selected rhymed verse to begin the next verse.  #droppoemsnotbombs project is a friendly, cross-cultural variation of such pastime: American musicians of different genres present a verse of Rumi’s poetry in Persian with their favorite musical instruments. We hope to continue this exchange with musicians residing in Iran, reciting classic American poetry.” – Ari Honarvar

For those who may not know, Rumi was a 13th century mystic poet whose poems have inspired countless people throughout the centuries.

Oh lovers, oh lovers!
I have lost my wine cup!
I’ve been drinking from such wine
that cannot be contained in a vessel!

ای عاشقان ای عاشقان پیمانه را گم کرده‌ام
زان می که در پیمانه‌ها اندرنگنجد خورده‌ام
I participated in #droppoemsnotbombs because I want the people of Iran to know that most Americans share their love of life, beauty, and peace, and don’t want another war. I love the colorful, rich cultural diversity this world has to offer, and I don’t want to see it destroyed by conflict. I also know that music is a powerful way to build bridges of understanding and sympathy between cultures, bridges we so desperately need at this time!
